Human beings experience a wide range of emotions throughout their lifetime. We categorize these emotions as good or bad. What motivates us to do this? Are there such things as good or bad emotions? We like to tell ourselves that happiness is the natural state for all human beings. However, this is not the case. We are drawn to the emotion of happiness, but not to the emotion of sadness. In fact, we want it to disappear immediately. We must be willing to accommodate all emotions, good or bad. The reason for this feeling must be understood. We must sit with each emotion and become more aware of it. We want to avoid the reason why we may be feeling this way. Do not avoid unpleasant feelings or situations. Society has conditioned us to believe that if we are not happy all the time, it means we are defective. We believe that experiencing painful thoughts indicates that we are weak. Especially when we are unable to control them. But that is life. We like to claim that we are in full control of our minds and that we can choose what we feel and think, but we cannot. The mind likes to tell stories whether we like it or not. Our only task as humans is to process our thoughts and determine why we think the way we do. In order to live a good life, we do not have to get rid of all of our negative emotions. Life is not without pain. It cannot be avoided. Pain serves as a reminder that we are all human. Avoiding negative emotions can be problematic. Often, it is necessary to pull up a chair and sit down with it in order to decode this complex emotion. When you attempt to figure it out, the faster it will leave, and if it ever returns, you will have the tools to handle it.

 

We can be so invested in our emotions because they are our own. In situations in which we are involved, we do not provide the best advice. Sometimes we need to take a step back. When you’re feeling sad or angry take yourself out of the equation. 

 

There is no such thing as a good or bad emotion. Despite our love of good emotions and the feeling of being on top of the world, we cannot achieve those feelings without experiencing the growth we make during those painful emotions. It is easy to be the best version of ourselves when we are happy. It is about those bad emotions that determine who we will become. This is where we see who people are. 

 

Stop categorizing your emotions as good or bad, accept them as they are. Emotions. Use your self-awareness to figure them out rather than push them down. If you’re feeling sad say it. Say “hey I’m feeling sad right now.” You don’t have to fake it with people and act like you’re happy. All you’re doing is not caring about yourself.
